NFL Power Rankings Week 5: Raiders drop, Patriots surge

A chaotic Week 5 reshuffled the NFL power rankings, headlined by the Las Vegas Raiders suffering the week's largest fall with a 15-spot drop to No. 22. At the top of the board, the San Francisco 49ers claimed No. 1, while the New England Patriots executed the biggest rise by leaping 12 positions to No. 5. Meanwhile, the undefeated Minnesota Vikings continued their ascent into the top three.

Top Five Leaders

San Francisco 49ers take over No. 1 with a 2.25 rating and a 5-0 record after defeating the Seattle Seahawks 32-29 away. However, the 49ers moved into the top spot because rivals changed around them rather than their own play, as rating shifts across the league drove the climb. Defensive end Nick Bosa and fullback Kyle Juszczyk were listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report.

Jacksonville Jaguars dropped one spot to No. 2 with a 2.23 rating despite moving to 4-1 with a 19-17 home win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The decline was driven entirely by their own rating, as Jacksonville fell 1.69 points short of its 3.69 pre-game expected margin. Safety Eric Murray was listed as Doubtful on the Week 5 injury report, rendering his availability uncertain.

Minnesota Vikings rose two places to No. 3 with a 1.67 rating following a 23-13 victory away against the New Orleans Saints. Driven mostly by their own performance, Minnesota exceeded its 1.97 pre-game expected margin by 8.03 points behind a defense holding a league-best No. 1 ranking in EPA allowed per play. Tackle Christian Darrisaw was listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report.

Kansas City Chiefs held steady at No. 4 on their bye week with a 1.44 rating and a 4-0 record. With no game played in Week 5, Kansas City stayed in place while slight adjustments reflected movement from rival teams.

New England Patriots vaulted 12 spots to No. 5 with a 1.18 rating after a 45-17 home victory against the Las Vegas Raiders. Mostly driven by their own play, New England shattered its pre-game expected margin of -0.60 by 28.60 points. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and cornerback Carlton Davis III were listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report.

Week 5 Risers and Fallers

New England Patriots recorded the week's largest climb, rising 12 ranks to No. 5 after defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 45-17 at home. New England dominated against a pre-game expected margin of -0.60, outperforming expectations by 28.60 points.

Green Bay Packers surged 11 places to No. 16 with a 0.03 rating after a 31-7 home victory over the Chicago Bears. Driven mostly by their own play, Green Bay surpassed its pre-game expected margin of -2.85 by 26.85 points. Running back Chris Brooks and wide receiver Savion Williams were listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report.

Houston Texans rose nine spots to No. 15 with a 0.15 rating after earning a 26-3 road win over the Tennessee Titans. Driven entirely by their own rating, Houston exceeded its pre-game expected margin of -0.07 by 23.07 points. Wide receiver Tank Dell was listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report.

Las Vegas Raiders suffered the week's largest drop, falling 15 places to No. 22 with a -0.46 rating following a 17-45 road loss to the New England Patriots. Las Vegas finished 28.60 points below its 0.60 pre-game expected margin. Wide receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr. and wide receiver Jalen Nailor were listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report.

Indianapolis Colts fell eight positions to No. 24 with a -0.47 rating after losing 22-34 away to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Driven mostly by their own game performance, Indianapolis fell 11.97 points short of its -0.03 pre-game expected margin. Defensive end Arden Key and wide receiver Ashton Dulin were listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report.

Chicago Bears dropped six places to No. 9 with a 0.77 rating following a 7-31 road loss against the Green Bay Packers. Chicago fell 26.85 points short of its 2.85 pre-game expected margin. Linebacker Keyshaun Elliott and running back Kyle Monangai were listed as Out on the Week 5 injury report, while quarterback Caleb Williams was listed as Questionable, leaving his status uncertain.
